The 12th century Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria do Bouro was sensitively remodelled in 1989 by Eduardo Souto de Moura, considered one of Portugal’s greatest contemporary architects. Whilst preserving the original character of the monastery, the interior has been tastefully redesigned to provide modern, minimalist surroundings in which guests can relax and immerse themselves in the atmosphere of a bygone era.
Situated on the outskirts of the Peneda-Geres National Park, the Pousada provides a good base from which to explore Portugal’s only National Park – an area of lush vegetation amidst a hilly landscape of jumbled granite rocks.
