The Pousada Dona Maria I is located opposite the impressive Queluz Palace, known as ‘the Portuguese Versailles’. The hotel, opened in 1995 after careful restoration and is housed within the Torre do Relogio ‘Clock Tower,’ once the home of the Royal Guard. The Palace kitchen, which once served the Royal Court in the summer, was converted into the now famous `Cozinha Velha’ restaurant, renowned for its traditional Portuguese cooking and delicious pastry recipes. This property provides a good base from which to explore the city of Lisbon (only 5km) and the surrounding towns.
