To the north of the hill top town of Crato stands the Pousada Flor da Rosa. Originally built in 1356 this monastery-fortress has served as a castle, convent and palace and evidence of this illustrious past can still be seen throughout the property. The fortress was converted into a hotel in 1995 under the guidance of designer Joao Carrilho de Graca who carefully introduced an understated modern interior that subtly complements the charm of the original building. Located 22km from the walled town of Portalegre, near to the Spanish border, the Pousada Flor da Rosa is an ideal base from which to explore the natural reserve of Serra de Sao Mamede or to venture into neighbouring Spain.
